144 pages; This biography of an important Swedish Court Painter is beautifully and appropriately bound at or near the time of publication by G. Hedberg, Royal bookbinder in Stockholm: black straight-grained morocco over swirl-marbled paper-covered boards, five raised bands on the spine, with elaborate gilt-stamped decoration and central devices depicting an artist's palette with three arrows through the finger hole -- the palette bodies have alternating onlays of red and pale green leather, red label lettered in gilt in the second panel, pale floral endpapers in a Jugendstil pattern, edges of the text block decoratively marbled in a matching style. The binder's ticket is mounted to the lower corner of the front paste-down endpaper: ["G. Hedberg / Kongl. Hofbokbindare / Stockholm"]. The subject is the painter David von Krafft (1655 – 1724), the nephew and student of David Klöcker Ehrenstrahl and his successor (in 1698) as painter to the Swedish Royal Court. Krafft became famous for his portraits of King Charles XII of Sweden, his generals and various members of the Royal court. There are 11 plates including a frontispiece -- halftones from photographs. OCLC Number: 256714773 (no locations in the U.S.) The spine as attractively faded slightly to tan and there is a bit of light rubbing at the corners. Text in Swedish. 5 p.l. 144 & [1, errata]
